JAMB breaks 40 year record, remits over N5bn to fed govt

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), said it has saved and returned to the Federal Government the sum of over N5 billion, from the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

According to a statement signed by the Head of Information JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, and made available to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja, the returned amount is the highest recorded by the board within the last 40 years, as a result of its transparent system and judicious use of resources.

He noted that more money could be saved to alleviate the harsh conditions of the economy if other government agencies emulate the Board in prudent management of resources.

While stressing that the board was more interested in protecting the sanctity of its mandate, JAMB has cautioned its direct entry and foreign candidates not to indulge in multiple registrations as anyone caught would be disqualified instantly.

“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board will not condone any act of multiple registration in the on going registration for Direct Entry and UTME for foreign centres. Candidates are to note that multiple registration is a serious offence in the process of obtaining the Board’s application form be it UTME or the DE currently on sale.

“The public is requested to note that any candidate who indulges in double registration will be caught by our software and disqualified. This information is necessary for the public to know so that when such candidates are sanctioned it will be understood.

“The Board is not interested in the candidates’ money as being insinuated by certain group who suggested to the Board that such registration will enhance the revenue base of the Board. No, we are more interested in the sanctity of the examination and not the money. If money is our concern we would not be returning over N5 billion to the Federal Government coffers.

“This year, we have remit to government over 5 billion naira, the highest ever in the 40 years of the Board. This money was saved through the transparent and judicious use of resources.

“The Prof Oloyede led management is working round the clock to ensure a transparent, aceptable and fair admission process that is selection of candidates. It has design a software known as CAPS, Central Admissions Processing System where human interference will be completely removed.

“The admission criteria would be keyed into the software and it will select candidates blindly according to institutions requirement without any premordial consideration. Once you meet the requirements you are picked, you don’t need to know anybody. This will promote equity and fairness to all.

“Our mandate is to be fair to all irrespective of tribe, religion etc and the Board is determined to meet the expectations of Nigerians,” the statement read in parts.
