Flood wrecks havoc in Port-Harcourt, one dead

Torrents of rain has wreaked havoc in different parts of Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

Several areas were flooded in Port Harcourt following heavy rainfall throughout the weekend.

Some of the areas affected by the flood include Rumuigbo, Rumuolumeni, D/Line, Diobu, Rumuola, Rukpokwu and the premises of the Federal Road Safety Corps, along Aba Road.

People were displaced from their homes and properties worth millions of naira destroyed, with activities disrupted at worship centers across the state as a result of the flood.

It was gathered that the Ntawaogba Creek in Port Harcourt overflowed its bank due to debris and lack of maintenance.

Also, a man simply identified as Elijah was feared dead in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt.

Witnesses say Elijah who is a petty trader was electrocuted inside his flooded room.

Another victim of the flooding, Inyesoemi Benibo blamed the situation on a construction company handling the Rumuolumeni road who he accused of neglecting the plight of residents within the area.

“For those of us in Rumuorlumeni, we have complained about the way the construction company is going about their work.

“We are not okay with it and we have reported to the governor. As they are building this road, they were supposed to create a channel for water to pass but they have refused to listen to us. Any little rain that falls causes flooding and that is what we are seeing now,” he said.
