The board have in mind that if Wenger signs, it will spark widespread protests across the club's fanbase who have repeatedly asked the Frenchman to leave.

Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League last season hence failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

After the FA Cup final, the Gunners board will meet to discuss Wenger's future and likely rubber-stamp the decision to extend his contract.

Signing a new contract means Wenger will have his role at the club greatly reduced as the club prepare for a day when Wenger will not be at the helm of the club.

The club would appoint someone to oversee some contract and logistical dealings.

The Gunners go into Saturday's final as underdogs after a fifth place finish in the league and a fresh injury crisis depriving them of at least two key defenders.
