5 football legends who have scored more than 500 career goals

Lionel Messi scored his 500th goal for Barcelona in their 3-2 win against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Sunday, April 23.

The Argentine is the all-time goalscorer for Barcelona and has several records to his name.

The 5-time Ballon d'Or winner reached a special milestone after netting a last minute goal against Los Blancos in another fierce edition of the El Clasico.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo (518 goals)

Ronaldo scored his 500th club goal in a Champions league game against Malmo in September 2016.

The 31-year-old has netted 518 club goals in 712 appearances for three clubs.

He scored 5 times for Sporting Lisbon, 118 times for Manchester United and 395 times for Madrid.

He is also the all-time record goal scorer Real Madrid.

2. Gerd Mueller

The German legend is one of the greatest scorers in football history.

The former Bayern Munich foward scored a total of 615 goals in 636 appearances.

In 2004, he was name in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players.

3. Romario

Romário de Souza Faria popularly known as Romario is regarded by many as the most dangerous player ever inside the box.

He scored a total of 688 goals in 886 appearances for many clubs around the world including Spanish giants Barcelona, PSV and Valencia among others.

He is currently the Federal Senator of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

4. Pele

Pele is a household name in world football today.

The Brazilian legend is regarded as the greatest football player to have ever played the game by Golden Foot.

It is reported that he netted 646 goals in 665 club appearances. He played most of his games for Santos.

5. Ferenc Puskás

The Hungarian legend played most of his club games in Hungary and later moved to Real Madrid where he ended his career.

He scored a total of 616 goals in 620 club appearances.

In October 2009, he was awarded the player who has scored the "most beautiful goal" and that brought about the introduction of the FIFA Puskás Award.
