The Real Madrid man struck twice in his club's UEFA Super Cup victory over De Gea's Manchester United last month, while he bagged a brace for La Roja in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Italy on Saturday.
De Gea is not surprised by his compatriot's exploits and expects more to come from the 25-year-old.
"Personally I have known Isco for ages so it's no surprise for me what he's doing," said De Gea.
"I have seen him doing incredible things for so long now so people shouldn't be surprised either.
"He's been performing at a high level and doing incredible things on the pitch for a while.
"He's at a top level and that's great for the team. We hope he keeps improving.
"Bearing in mind his personality, he'll become one of the greatest."
Spain are three points clear of the Azzurri in Group G with three matches remaining heading into tonight's trip to minnows Liechtenstein.
