Alexis Sanchez is understood to be “devastated”, after his move from Arsenal to Manchester City fell apart on transfer deadline day.
The Gunners accepted City’s second bid of £55m plus £5m in add-ons on Thursday, but the deal could only be ratified if Arsene Wenger brought in a new attacking player.
Monaco’s Thomas Lemar was one of the replacements targeted, while the other was Paris Saint-Germain’s Julian Draxler.
Arsenal initially agreed to pay the £92m Monaco demanded for the 21-year-old, but there appears to be insufficient time for them to agree a package with Lemar, who is in the France squad for this evening’s game against Holland.
This means that Sanchez, who was clearly desperate to leave the Emirates, will now have to stay put for the last year of his contract .
Sanchez is currently in Chile for his country’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Paraguay and will return to North London after the international break.
Wenger now faces a battle to try to get the 28 year-old back on side.
