Police Arrest Grandmother For Dumping Day Old Baby In Bush


A grandmother, Bosede Oyetunde has been convicted to one-month imprisonment for allegedly throwing a one-day old baby boy into the bush, in Ondo State.

According to the prosecution, the accused persons, Mrs. Oyetunde aged 56 and Opeyemi Isaac aged 20, conspired to commit a felony with murder and unlawful attempt to kill a day old baby boy by wrapping the child in a nylon bag and thrown into the bush.

The offence committed is contravened sections 516, and 320(2) of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

The accused persons pleaded guilty to the two count charges when it was read to them.

DSP Olayemi Ojumu narrated the circumstances that led to the arrest of the first and second accused persons, saying that police division in Igbotako was alerted and investigations were carried out which later led to their arrest.

The Police Officer, who is in charge of children special center, ‘A’ Division Akure, since the arrest of the two accused persons, the boy has been with the police, and the naming ceremony of was done in the police station.

Speaking with newsmen, the accused person said her action was prompted by the fear of how to take care of the baby.
According to Oyetunde who did not deny her action said it was the work of the devil.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate, Mrs. O.A Edwin observed that she committed the offence because of her poverty and sentenced the accused to one-month imprisonment.

She also ordered her to render two months’ community service in Omotoso police station.

Edwin ordered the second accused person who was the mother of the baby to go for mental assessment because the court observed that she was not normal mentally.

The Magistrate thereafter ordered the mother to be breastfeeding the baby in Ondo State children home.
