A controversial pastor in Durban, South Africa has claimed that he can "cure" gays and lesbians.

Pastor Hamilton Nala, who leads the Nala Mandate International, said during his sermon on Sunday, August 13 that being gay or lesbian is a "choice" and can therefore be reversed.

He said: "Whoever wants to take me to court for this can go ahead, as far as I know in South Africa there is a constitution that says I have a right to my opinion."

His comments sparked criticism from LGBT activists. Hlengiwe Buthelezi, chairperson of KZN LGBT Recreation, disputed that being gay is something that can be reversed.

He said: “It’s nature. By saying he can heal us, he is proclaiming he is mightier than God because God created us the way we are.”

LGBT activists protested outside Tala's church but were refused entry.

Pastor Nala has previously claimed that his holy water could cure HIV, sparking condemnation from health practitioners.
