13-year-old boy marries his pregnant lover in China

- A boy and his pregnant girlfriend, both aged 13, have tied the knot in China

- A video of the ceremony has surfaced online

- While their relatives seemed pleased, the marriage has sparked online controversy

An unsettling video has surfaced online showing a 13-year-old boy and his pregnant girlfriend, also aged 13, apparently tying the knot in China.

According to reports, the marriage took place in a village in Hainan Province, China, in June.

The video has sparked online controversies, with many expressing the view that the couple is too young to look after each other.

An official from Ding'an County, the jurisdiction under which the marriage took place, said the couple was too young to register their marriage.

Their families therefore arranged a ceremony to seal their union. The teenagers, who were clad in red outfits, bowed to heaven, their in-laws and to each other.

The teenagers' families looked happy despite the online controversy that followed. Although legal marriage age in China is 20 for women and 22 for men, child marriages are reportedly common.

The practice has partly been blamed on China's one-child policy, which has resulted in more men than women. This has reportedly forced many Chinese parents to marry off their children at a young age in a bid to sidestep competition and continue their bloodline.
