A police officer from Akwa Ibom state who was wrongfully dismissed 21 years ago has been reinstated

The officer was reinstated after a petition was submitted on behalf of the officer

According to the petition, the officer was illegally dismissed without trial

A Nigerian police officer, Celestine Williams, who was wrongfully dismissed 21 years ago, has been reinstated after a petition was made on Wednesday, April 13, 2016.

In the petition submitted to the Senate by Senator Bassey Albert, the officer was dismissed in 1996 after he was listed to investigate a businessman who allegedly used his connections to dismiss Williams and his colleagues.

Albert stated that Williams and his colleagues were arrested and detained in Lagos for 11 months at Onikan station.

According to Albert, the 1996 Assistant Inspector General, Alhaji Musa, went to the Onikan station and released the officer and his colleagues but on their return back to their own station, the new officer in charge refused their re-documentation and decided to dismiss him without a trial.

Senator Albert requested that the senate intervene in the case. The senate then referred the matter to its committee on Ethics Priviledges and Public petitions for further investigations.

After investigations, the committee recommended that the officer who was a corporal in 1996 should be re-instated to Assistant Superintendent which should be his current rank if he was not dismissed in 1996.
