Arya Permana, a 10-year-old boy from Cipurwasari village in West Java, Indonesia made international headlines over the past year for being the world's fattest child.

He weighed a staggering 192kg, ate five meals a day because he was constantly hungry and could not walk for long distances due to his weight.

However, Arya has now lost 18kg after undergoing bariatric surgery in April and is steadily shedding more.

Arya's doctors told CNN that the weight-loss surgery reduced the size of his stomach in order to reduce the amount of food he can eat.

He is now unable to eat beyond a certain limit, which induces him to throw up food if he exceeds.

The doctors also put him an a strict diet of vegetables and fruits before and after the surgery. In addition, Arya has to go through an exercise routine of walking and swimming.

Arya's mother Rokaya, 36, told CNN: "We are happy and relieved but he is still overweight for his age. We are hoping that one day he will lose all the extra weight and be as healthy as other children at his class."
