Former Leicester and Derby boss Nigel Pearson is the favorite to replace Moyes

Sunderland have confirmed the resignation of manager David Moyes a day afterplaying their final Premier League game of the season.

The club have confirmed the former Real Soceidad manager's departure on Monday evening after the Scot informed Black Cats owner Ellis Short of his intention to leave the post at a meeting in London on Monday.

Sunderland who finished bottom of the table ended their season with a 5-1 thrashing at champions Chelsea.

In a statement Short said: "I pursued the services of David Moyes for a considerable period prior to his appointment last summer, which makes the announcement of his departure difficult for everyone concerned.

"Having worked tirelessly throughout the campaign to avoid relegation from the Premier League, David has chosen to leave the club without compensation, which is testament to his character."

Moyes, a former Manchester United manager signed a four-year deal with the club in July 2016.

At that point, Short admitted he had pursued the coach before hiring the previous five bosses at the Stadium of Light.

The 54-year-old's tenure saw Sunderland finish rock bottom in the top flight in Moyes' sole season in charge, 16 points from safety.

Former Leicester City and Derby County boss Nigel Pearson is the favorite to replace Moyes.
