Nine persons died yesterday in an accident in Benin City, involving a tipper and a commercial bus.Confirming the crash, the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Samuel Odukoya, said the accident occurred around 6:00a.m. along Upper Sokponba road, near Oka market in Ikpoba-Okha Local Council Area.
According to the report, all the passengers in the commercial bus marked BEN 435 ZN died.The Guardian leant that six of the passengers, including a pregnant woman died on the spot, while the others who were rushed to the hospital died later.
An eyewitness account explained that the tipper rammed into the bus when it parked to pick a passenger.The accident made commercial drivers on that route to suspend their operations for several hours in protest against the death, forcing commuters to trek long distances to their destinations.
One of the protesting drivers said they decided to suspend work to protest against reckless driving by tipper drivers.An angry mob set the tipper ablaze, but the driver escaped.At the Central Hospital morgue in Benin, families were seen trooping in to identify their relatives.
