He was the first to be commissioned to the British Army's Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment

Major Nana Kofi Twumasi-Ankrah, a Ghanaian born British Army officer, has been appointed as an equerry to serve in the royal household by the Queen of England.

Major Nana Kofi Twumasi-Ankrah, an officer of the British Army's Household Calvary Mounted Regiment, will be the first equerry of African descent to serve the royal house of Windsor.

He was also the first officer of African descent to be commissioned to the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

Speaking in a short documentation titled "See Britain through my eyes", Major Twumasi-Ankrah states that he was born in Ghana, but currently resides in the United Kingdom (UK), where he serves in the British Army's most senior regiment. He states that his family moved to the UK in 1982.

"I command one 120 men, and a 120 horse here in London," said Major Twumasi-Ankrah, talking about his ranking position in his unit position needless to say that will bring great honor to his country of birth.

"As a child, watching Her Majesty the Queen's birthday parade on the television. I would have never, ever imagined that one day I would command the regiment that I'd fallen in love with on that day," Speaking on the documentary.

The Queen's equerry has historically been an officer drawn from a branch of the British Armed Forces to serve as a sort of aid-de-camp, or personal attendant (assistant), to the British regent.

It's traditional that a junior officer (Captain or Navy Lieutenant) be appointed to a child monarch, while a senior officer (major or lieutenant-commander) be appointed for the queen.


Major Nana Kofi Twumasi-Ankrah, 38 years old, is a veteran of the Afghanistan conflict and is thought to be ready to take over from the Royal Air Force's Sam Fletcher, a Wing Commander a current equerry to the Royal Family since 2015.
