Why You Should Consider Eating Banana Strings Along With The Fruit

Banana is a fruit that has a lot of inherent benefits and very many of us, both lovers and haters have little idea as to its usefulness. Bananas are tropical fruits are edible and is botanically a berry produced by several kinds of large herbaceous flowering plants. Some countries refer to bananas used for cooking as plantains.

Worldwide, there is no sharp distinction between “bananas” and “plantains”. In the Americas and Europe, “banana” usually refers to soft, sweet, dessert bananas, particularly those of the Cavendish group, while Musa cultivars that have firmer, starchier fruit are called “plantains”.

The fruit is variable in size, colour and firmness, but is usually elongated and curved, with soft flesh, rich in starch covered with a rind which may be green, yellow, red, purple, or brown when ripe.

Raw bananas are 75% water, 23% carbohydrates, 1% protein, and contain negligible fat. 100 grams of bananas supply 89 Calories and are a rich source of vitamin B6, providing 31% of the US recommended Daily Value, and contain moderate amounts of vitamin C, manganese and dietary fiber. Although bananas are commonly thought to supply exceptional potassium content, their actual potassium content is relatively low per typical food serving at only 8% of the US recommended Daily Value.

People love bananas for a bunch of reasons ranging from the delicious taste they provide to the the fact that they inspired hairstyle and comedic lines. There however the weird banana strings that hangs around our tasty fruit, making eating them a less than pleasing experience.

Unlike other fruits and things that have strings, the strings that hangs around the banana fruits are not just meant for decoration as they have important functions. Well, it turns out, unlike the pockets on 50 percent of our pants, they’re not just decorative. First of all, they’re not strings but are scientifically known as “phloem bundles.” Asides the name, the strings actually have a lot of beneficial effects for the banana and you if you can get around eating them.

Basically, phloem is a complex tissue that transports food and water in a plant. They help to provide the plant with sufficient food, nutrients, minerals and water to grow. What this means is that banana strings distribute nutrients up and down the banana as it ripens.

Since they are transport tissues, they are great sources of proteins and supply calories. As such, if you’re still grossed out by the strings, put your fear behind you and know that they serve a real and healthy purpose. You can choose to blend them to make your smoothie if you can’t eat them along. Whatever way you choose, your taste buds and body will appreciate it.
